Quickfile is an extension for Mozilla Thunderbird which initially aimed to speed up filing of messages into your mail folder heirarchy but now includes features for navigation and folder creation.
Select a message, hit ALT+Q, start typing. TAB works to select options if you want. On OS X change the shortcut to CONTROL+Q since that appears to work.
You can resize the dialog if it's not big enough for you, and Quickfile remembers this for next time.
